Wildermyth's New Console Edition: Bringing Legendary Adventures and Co-Op Gameplay to Your Living Room

Cult D&D-style RPG Wildermyth appeared to have reached its conclusion, so it was quite a surprise to see a perfectly-timed console port announcement, complete with local co-op gameplay.

Wildermyth stands out as an incredible turn-based RPG, brimming with character development reminiscent of a full D&D campaign. When its developers mentioned they were heading into hibernation after releasing a substantial DLC in May, it seemed that would be the final chapter for this beloved game.

Fortunately, that assumption proved wrong, as Wildermyth: Console Edition is set to release later this year. The console version, ported by strategy-centric studio Auroch Digital, comes with a completely revamped UI and control scheme to smoothly transition from keyboard to gamepad.

To make things even better, the console edition introduces local co-op multiplayer. Similar to how Baldur's Gate 3 showcased the brilliance of multiplayer gameplay, co-op seems like a natural fit for a game so akin to D&D. Wildermyth's character-driven narratives and turn-based mechanics are well-suited for this mode, and there's hope this feature might become available on PC as well – currently, the game supports Steam Remote Play, but a complete co-op mode would be a delightful addition.

Though the couch co-op feature offered by the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One versions is thrilling, the standout for me is the Switch port. The unique papercraft aesthetic and in-depth turn-based combat format make it easy to imagine losing track of time while playing campaigns on the go. As an enthusiast of portable turn-based strategy games, and considering the extensive hours I've invested into titles like Slay the Spire or Into the Breach on my Switch, to say nothing of Baldur's Gate 3 on my PC, it feels like Wildermyth is perfectly suited for the Switch.

There's still some time until Wildermyth lands on consoles on October 22, but given that many thought this game had potentially seen its last update despite its 15,000 Overwhelmingly Positive Steam reviews, waiting a few months more feels only natural.
