Reimagining Hellboy: A Fresh Take on the Iconic Hero in The Crooked Man

The upcoming film featuring the iconic crimson superhero is generating buzz, and its director has shared his perspective on whether this iteration should be categorized as a reboot. With a nod to past adaptations, the film aims to embrace the character's roots and present something unique.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man introduces a fresh installment in the film series centered around the fan-favorite hero. Fans may recall David Harbour's portrayal in the 2019 film, which faced considerable backlash. However, when many think of Hellboy, Ron Perlman’s performance in Guillermo del Toro’s earlier films (2004's Hellboy and 2008's Hellboy: The Golden Army) likely comes to mind. Those installments have garnered a loyal following over the years.

While the prior films are cherished by many, Brian Taylor, the director of The Crooked Man, feels they don’t completely capture the essence of the character. In a discussion with Total Film, he pointed out that even Mike Mignola, the character's creator, would acknowledge that those adaptations don't fully align with his vision. As revered as the earlier films are, there’s room for a fresh interpretation.

The latest movie retraces its creative roots, adopting a storyline steeped in traditional horror charm. Taking place in the 1950s, it is inspired by a niche comic book collection bearing the same title.Taylor indicates that this adaptation is not focused on launching a new franchise, but rather on offering a distinct story that stands alone.

He clarifies that the goal was never to replicate past efforts. Rather, he intends for it to resonate as its own entity: "I don’t view this as a reboot or an attempt to create a franchise – this is a movie meant to exist independently. There’s no interest in producing a subpar imitation of Guillermo del Toro's extensive cinematic investment. This film revisits the younger Hellboy, portraying him in a role akin to someone solving supernatural dilemmas. He is characterized as a wandering, witty individual, encounters the bizarre and assists where possible. If Mike perceives this version as true to his original vision, then we have accomplished our aim."
